Ronald McDonald House 2020 Quilt – This year due to COVID 19 no one was allowed into the house. The house sent us pictures of the kids in the house. We printed the pictures onto fabric squares, several chapter members put the squares together and it was quilted by Karen Barnes. The house did a virtual event and the quilt was auctioned for $16,100!

Step 1: decide on a design. Step2: shop for fabrics. Step3: cut fabrics. Step 4: Sew! With graph paper, pencil, and color pencils the process of design begins. How fitting that the design inspiration should come from a ‘Quilt of Valor’ since all to be featured are very brave sick children under treatment at Driscoll Children’s Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas and residing at the Ronald McDonald House (RMH). Special feature this year are the Torres triplets, of whom two were conjoined recently separated in a worldwide historic operation.
All the fabrics used for the quilt top were donated by guild members including the Singer Sewing Center. No shopping today, darn! The fabrics were cut during the June 2016 chapters community service meeting. Ten members participated in making twelve 16” blocks of various size stars. The center block fabric was “prepared for dying” (PFD) fabric. The star points were made up of brightly colored fabrics.
With all the blocks made, the children of the RMH were assembled for a finger painting party with the larger resident’s hand prints and baby’s foot prints strategically placed on the PFD squares of all stars. Next the blocks were sewn together. Once the borders were added it was time to head to the local quilt shop ‘Heirloom Elegance’ where the owner allows use of the long arm for charity quilts. Two hours later the quilting was completed, the binding was then added and not a day to soon.
The next day, Gala’s guest speaker, Mr. ‘Tony Parker #9 of the San Antonio Spurs came to the RMH and generously signed the quilt and wrote “Go Spurs!”
The evening of September 1, 2016 the ‘Casa de Amor’ Gala brought friends and families of the RMH together. Food, conversation, and merriment could not have prepared the four Corpus Christi ASG members attending for the big surprise to come. The live auction bid for the quilt happened in less than a minute, it happened so quickly, final bid $25,000.00! Yes, twenty-five thousand. Executive Director Michelle Horine came running and screaming, “Can you believe it?”
2016 is the third year the Corpus Christi Chapter has partnered with the RMH in raising monies to assist the families of sick children by sewing and donating a special quilt each year. To date monies raised from donated quilts total nearly $50,000.00.
Ronald McDonald Quilt 2015 – Drawings by Ronald McDonald resident children. Put together by ASG members and hand quilted by Karen Barnes. This quilt brought $7500 in a bid at the live auction at the Ronald McDonald House fund raiser.
The Ronald McDonald House was presented with our quilt project on August 23rd. The quilt was made from pictures the resident children had drawn. The pictures were scanned onto fabric, squares were put together in our SIS meeting and Jan Johnson put it together with beautiful bright colors backed with Ronald McDonald fabric. Jan also made a small wall hanging for the house to keep. The quilt will be featured in the 2014 Casa De Amor live auction for the Ronald McDonald House in Corpus Christi. The fundraiser is featuring Regis Philbin and the Regis Philbin Orchestra Thursday, September 11, 2014 Ortiz International Center fro 6:30 – 9:00. We are happy to support the Ronald McDonald House. It is our meeting place for Sew! It’s Saturday! Community service projects and Junior Sewing Day. They are also kind enough to store machines and fabrics for us in a locked closet.
